The Eric Allen Osborne Papers Concerning In Letters of Red consist of letters and manuscripts documenting the publication of the anthology in 1938. The collection spans the years 1935-38.

In Letters of Red was edited by Eric Allen Osborne, author of The Facts about A Christmas Carol (1937), and brings together the work of British poets, novelists, playwrites, scholars, journalists and others in what is described on the book jacket as a "crusade against Fascism." The book included work by both established and emerging authors, at the time of publication, and more than half the material appeared in print for the first time. Authors include: W. H. Auden, John Brownson, Cecil Day Lewis, Lion Feuchtwanger, George de Fiedorowicz, Louis Golding, Geoffrey Grigson, Robert Herring, Herbert Hodge, James Lansdale Hodson, Jeffrey Eardley Jeffrey, Peter Lagger, Louis MacNeice, Kingsley Martin, Siegfried Sassoon, John Strachey, Frank Tilsley, Edward Upward and Rex Warner. There is also a cartoon by David Low.
Series I, Correspondence , consists of correspondence to Osborne from 15 of the 20 contributors. The contributors not represented are Feuchtwanger, Grigson, Hodge, Lagger, and Martin. In most cases correspondence is limited to a single letter and addresses the contribution to the anthology. Letters mention manuscripts, revisions, copyright, and book royalties. All original letters are accompanied by a brief typescript summary of the letter contents.
Series II, Writings , consists of manuscripts from contributing writers. In this case there are roughly an equal number of typescript and printed versions (clippings) for all contributions. There is one holograph poem by Louis MacNeice, and there are holograph and typescript drafts of Osborne's editorial preface. All writings are accompanied by a typescript biographical statement.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections.
