Abstract

Record Group 48 is an open collection composed of records from individual churches in the six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Biographical / Historical

Christians first arrived in the area that would become New England in the early 1600s. The first Christian settlers were predominantly English Puritans, and members of other denominations arrived over the following decades. The churches represented in this collection are predominantly Congregational, with other denominations - including Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Methodist, Unitarian/Universalist, and others - also represented.
