Scope and Contents
The Hugh A. Bayne Papers consist of three types of material. Boxes 1 and 2 contain printed and typescript documents concerning Bayne's service on international arbitration commissions. Boxes 3 and 4 contain volumes of typescript memoirs with photographs, clippings, and correspondence pasted in. Three scrapbooks, originally catalogued as YYez. 892ba, were added to the papers in June, 1981. The scrapbooks, mainly from Bayne's undergraduate days at Yale, contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia. These scrapbooks were dismantled for microfilming and when filming was completed the clippings and other deteriorating paper were discarded. The remaining materials are in boxes 5-7, arranged by type.
All of the papers are available on microfilm (MICROFILM HM 81). The materials in boxes 3 and 4 are now restricted, in order to protect them; readers wishing to consult them must use the film.
The papers were given to Yale University Library by Hugh A. Bayne and his estate between 1928-41 and in 1956.

Abstract
The papers are primarily printed and typescript documents relating to Hugh Bayne's service on international arbitration commissions, some with his marginalia and accompanying notes. His decisions as arbiter include his interpretations of disarmament clauses of the Versailles Treaty (1923) and his opinion on the claims of the Standard Oil Company (1926) and on the claim of Belgium to the treasure of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The remainder of the papers is made up of three volumes of his memoirs, (1870-1943) with photographs, clippings and correspondence pasted in, and the contents of three scrapbooks kept by Bayne while a student at Yale College (1888-1892).
Biographical / Historical
Hugh Bayne was admitted to the bar in 1894. He practiced law in New Orleans from 1894-1898, and in New York City from 1898-1919. Bayne was a member of the legal services unit of the Reparations Commission under the Treaties of Versailles and St. Germain, 1919-1928.
