Scope and Contents

The Papers of Hugh Picken Brady constitute an unprocessed collection relating to forestry, conservation, environment studies, and the Yale University School of Forestry. The first two boxes contain papers relating to the Yale University Council Committee on the School of Forestry, including correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, printed matter, memorabilia, and other papers, dating between 1954 and 1967. Correspondents include Yale faculty, administrators, and alumni of the Forestry School, as well as faculty and administrators of other forestry schools and professional foresters. Subject matter includes the curriculum, facilities, and finances of the Forestry School, and the celebration of its sixtieth anniversary in 1960.

The third and fourth boxes contain papers relating to Brady's career as a lumber company executive. Included are correspondence and other records of Hugh P. Brady Lumber, Kings Lumber Company, and other corporations, the United States Department of Agriculture, various professional societies, and other organizations. These papers date from the 1930s through the 1960s. There is also one letter to Brady from his mother, dated 1927.

Abstract

The papers include material on the Yale School of Forestry and other Yale related interests and miscellaneous records relating to Hugh Picken Brady's lumbering activities, including the records of his own and other lumber companies. The papers relating to the Yale School of Forestry include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, printed matter and memorabilia for the period 1954-1967.

Biographical / Historical

Hugh Picken Brady was born in Sitka, Alaska, on February 19, 1891. He was educated at Phillips Andover Academy and Yale College, graduating from the latter in 1914. Immediately after graduation, Brady entered the lumber industry, first as assistant manager at A. C. Dutton Lumber Company, then concurrently as an owner and manager of Colby Lumber Company and as a partner at Brady & Ketcham Lumber Company. In 1933, he became president of Hugh P. Brady Lumber, Incorporated. He served his alma mater in various capacities in his later years and was awarded the Yale Award Medal in 1952.
