Abstract
Legal documents, mostly leases and warrants relating chiefly to the Grant family of Elchies and Ballindalloch in Moray County, Scotland, including a warrant to seize a rebel, issued in the reign of George II and dated December 18, 1736.
Biographical / Historical
Though the earliest history of the Grant family remains disputed, it is certain that the clan had become very prominent in Scotland by the 17th century. In the late 16th century, the Grant family built the castle of Ballindalloch. This came into possession of Sir James Grant in the early 18th century. James Grant was a commander in an independent highland company at the time, but would eventually serve in the American colonies during the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution, Grant served as a colonel for the British army.
