John Devereaux Thompson papers

John Devereaux Thompson was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1917. He received a B.A. degree from the College of the City of New York in 1948 and a M.S. degree in hospital administration from the Yale School of Medicine in 1950. Thompson served as a nurse in New York City and Hartford, Connecticut, from 1939-1948. He held a number of positions at Montefiore Hospital in New York City, including assistant director (1950-1956), research associate (1956-1961), associate professor of public health and nursing administration (1961-1966), and director of the program in hospital administration (1961-1972). In 1966, Thompson came to Yale and served as a professor of public health (hospital administration) and nursing administration. He was associate dean of the School of Medicine from 1968-1972. Thompson was considered an expert on hospital design and architecture and health service delivery problems. He is best known for his work with colleagues in establishing the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), an information system which allowed comparisons of hospital costs and charges. Thompson died on August 13, 1992.
