Heath and Sens, Queen-street, Cardiff pmnerorte makers, organ builders, and music ware- heuseaieu, have collected aai imposm<- array of tesLi. naonials and Press opinions relating to the quality of tile musical instruments supplied by them The firm is so well kuewn iu Cardiff, aud, indeed, throuirhw South Wales and the Wesu ef England, that it is hai-dly necessary here to dwell upom its i*fluenoe snd coiMBiaading position. This collection of testimonials serves, however, do something more than certify to the excellence ef the instruments furnished by Messrs. Heath and Sons. It shows, in sense how steady is the growth among the general public of a desire for a knowledge of music, and haw increasingly numerous, even m the homes ef the work ins- classes es are uianos. organs, and harmoniums. The Treat majority of the letters in this list relate to pianos and while manv of them have reference to most costly instruments containing all the latest improve- ments, supplied to the well-to-do, the greater num ber relate to serviceable instruments purchased for the homes of the wage-earning portion of the community. This growing love for so refining an art as music is a most favourable sign. For theueh. in the Principality music has for generations been the chief recreation of the people, It kas for the most art been choral music in connection with churches and chapels that has occupied attention. Instru mental music is new, however, receiving its fair s are of attention, and all these in true symnathv with the art must trust that the movement will o.« steadily onward. These testimonials have b >en re ceived from every quarter of the PriacipaHtv while not » few come from other portions of the United Kingdom, and some from South America, India, and other distaut countries. All speak most favourably of Messrs. Heath's business methods as well a- Je their instruments. ° R. J. HEATH AND SOSö INVITE INSPECTION. PONTYPRIDD ACCIDENT. Actions Against the Taff Vale Railway Company. As a result of the accident which oeciirrijd on the Taff Vale Railway, near Treforeet Junc- tion, Pontypridd, several actions have been commenced against the company for compen- sa,tion by those who were injured and relatives of the persons killed. The defendants made an application that all the actions, with the excep- tion of that brough t by the widow of Mr. James Brown, Scott-street, Cardiff, should be stayed until the trial of that cause. An order has been made by the High Court in the terms of the application, and the defendants have given an undertaking to be bound upon all points except damages by the ultimate result of the action brought by Mrs. Brown. Mr. i-j (Vusin>. solicitor. Cardiff, is acting- for the plaintiff, and the cause will be tried at Swansea, Assizes, commencing on the 21st of next month. THE LITERARY POLICEMAN
THE LITERARY POLICEMAN Still at Work 811 His Welsh Bibliegraphy for the Century. Mr. Charles Ashton, the literary policeman, is moving on well with his Welsh bibliography, which now contains about 10,000 entries of Welsh books, books in other languages relating to Wales or Welsh matters, periodicals, news- papers, songs, &c., published during the present century. The work will be about four times the size of Rowlands' "Cambrian Bibliography" (154-6-1800), and will be published by the National Eisteddfod Association. The society shows considerable impatience to have the work sent to press, but Mr. Ashton is deter- mined to withhold it as long as possible in order to enter ordnance maps, Acts of Parliament, &f., relating to Wales, and any other publica- tions he may receive or see. It would be an excellent thing if a complete Welsh biblio- graphy of the whole century could be produced on the other hand, there is naturally much im- patience to get Air. work into type, and we hope the day is not far distant when the public will have the work on which such pains and labour have been expended in their hands.

CARDIFF SAVINGS' BANK. What Depositors will Receive as a Final Dividend. TO THE EDITOR OF THE" EVENING EXPRESS." Sir,—There seemfe to be an impression t amongst some of the depositors that they will reoaive 3s. in the £ dividend on the full amounts which they had deposited in the bank. This is not so. r wish to make it clear that the depositors will only reoeive a dividend on the balance, admitted to be due to them. Tiake. for example., the caee of a regular depositor who had, say, deposited in the bank J3100. Out of this the depositor would have already received from the trustees 17s. 6d. in the £87 10s.—leaving a balance due of £ 12 10s., which would be the sum admitted by the official liquidator. The depositor will receive 3s. ki the £ on i!;i .013 los., wonld mean £1 17s. 6d., as a finial dividend.—I am. &c., WILLIAM JONES, Solicitor for the Depositors. 29, St. Mai\-street, Cardiff.
DRUNK IN THE DOCK.
DRUNK IN THE DOCK. Blaina Parents Prosecuted for Cruelty to a Girl. An unusual occurrence took place at Biaina Petty Sessions on Friday (before Dr. W. E. Williams, Mr. Ja.me.s Phillips, and Mr. Titus Phillips) in a case of alleged cruelty to a child. —Henry Hemmings, 35, collier, Nantvglo. and Catherine, his wife, were charged, at the in- stance of the National Society for the Preven- tion of Cruelty to Children,' with ill-treating and neglecting Mary Elizabeth Hemmings. their daughter, aged nine years, between December 1. 1893. and May 17, 1894.—Henry, whose demeanour in the dock was rather excit- able, vehemently denied the charge, but his wife admitted that she had beaten her daughter on several occasions.—Mr. Lewis E. Webb, of Pontypool, in opening the case for the prosecu- tion was subjected to repeated interruptions by the father, and in the, course of a descrip- tion of how the girl had been tied to a chair by hini all night he exclaimed, "You are a liar. Mr. Webb could not proceed further, and their worships consulted, after which the Chairman said they had decided that Henry Hemmings "va" not in a fit comditon to plead. He was drunk, and would be remanded in custody to Ebbw Vale Police-court on Thursday next.— Rachel Woods, a, widow, living by defendants at Wesley-buildings, Nantyglo, and the chikl gave evidence to justify the remand, and the. male prisoner was afterwards removed to the cells in an excited condition. The charge against Mrs. Hemmings was adjourned to the same court, and she took charge of the girl, refusing to allow her to remain in the custody of Inspector Coates. of the society, until the I hearing of the case. The bidding on Lot 1, called Cwmchrycbau and Creigiau.T\ a.s fairly brisk, the property going up to £1.600 without the timber, but as this did not reach the reserve price the lot was withdrawn. MARKING OF THE MANGO.
MARKING OF THE MANGO. Two New Expressions of Opinion en the Indian Mystery. The current number of India naturally (says the Pall Mall Gazette) contains several articles which treat the marking of the mango tree. Sir William Wedderburn, M.P., remarks that ne doubt by getting up this scare the Spectator has done the Gevernment of India a disservice. But it will not be without its uses if the British public is thereby induced to open its eyes to our real dangers, and to insist upon such inquiry and reforms as will give to India that content- ment and prosperity which, with reasonably fair play. she would undoubtedly enjoy." Dr. W. A. Hunter, M.P., declares that there are three Indian perils: (1) The extreme costliness of British government (2) the attempt to im- PF.OP upon tbo jwsplc: British ideps of wicrality and religion; and (3) the overbearing maruaer of the Anglo-Indians towards natives, especially those of higher rank.

--IT fDevices in Dentistry,
IT f Devices in Dentistry, TOOLS OF THE UP TO DATE TOOTH SURGEON. Pulling Yaur Moiars is no Longer Necessary as they can be new Patched and Tinkered. The day of reckless tooth pulling has pstssei There is not one tooth lost now where there used to be 100, and it is a mighty poor tooth that the skilled operator of to-day cannot render far better and more serviceable than the best poe- sible false one. Few people have anythiiig but the slightest notion of the revolution in dentistry that has taken place within the paat few years. Merely with respect to what elec- tricity has accomplished in that branch of medi- cal science, there is a good deal to be said,. By the use of an electric light iu connection with the little mirror introduced into tlw mouth, the teeth and alveolar processes are brilliantly- illuminated and rendered translucent. Thus anything wrong about the teeth may be quickly discovered. For example, dead tooth- pulp shows black and opaque. Perhaps the dead tooth may be hidden on the jaw. never ha,ving been erupted, and may have been the obscure cause of trouble for years. The light reveals it at once. Facial neuralgia, by the way, is nearly always due to a dead tooth, and may be stopped by a good dentist. Electricity is most valuable as a mot:e power for tooth-boring tools, which, strange t« say, cause less pain the faster they go. Most people now grown up can re-call the excruciating pa.in caused by the excavating instrument which the dentist of a generation ago slowly re- volved between his fingers. The "burrs, now made for such work, are much finer than they were half a dozen years ago, being capable of cutting through steel bars. Furthermore the laborious method of turning them out by hand has been superseded by a machine which produces them at a very small cost. The machine-made burrs are much more perfect, those less in size than a pin-head being too small for observatiou with the naked eye, but exhibiting under a magnifying glass the forms of most erqsisite cutting tools. Electricity is employed also for pulling teeth. The mechanism consists of a two-cell battery with vibrator attachment—th# latter a thin strip of metal fastened at both ends &nd made to vibrate 1.000 or more times a second by a current. At each vibration the current is cut and renewed again, the effect being to give a steady flow of the fluid. To make sure that the flow is satisfactory, the operar tor tunes the machine w; th a little reed tuning- pipe until the strip of metal sings "A." To the battery are attached three wires. Two of them ha.ve handles at the end, while the third is attached to the forceps. The patient grasps the handles, the electricity is turned on sud- denly, and the dentist simultaneously applies his forceps to the tooth. The instant the tooth is touched, it, as well as the surrounding parts, becomes insensible to pain. A jerk and it is The lastest and most ingenious ressrt of the dental surgeon is "implantation," i.e.. the setting of new teeth into the jaw. For this purpose real teeth are employed, and not arti- ficial ones. Cocaine having been first applied for producing local anaesthesia, a hole is drilled in the jawbone, a.nd into this socket- a. good tooth, newly drA-mii from i«omebody's jaw, is set. If the patient is young and vigorous the osseous structure soon closes around it, and by the time the gum is healed the tooth is ready for use. It should last for from three to ten years. In the case of an elderly or feeble person it may be fastened in place by silver wires passing around the jawbone. One of the most important improvements in modern dental practice is on the point of being accomplished. It will consist in the substitution of porcelain for gold in the filling of teeth. For this purpose a piece of thin platinum foil is introduced into t.be "cavity," and so mauipulatued as to take the exact form of the hole, as if it were intended as a lining. Then it is carefuly withdrawn so as not to disturb its s-u-ape. Thus is obtained a mold from which a porcelain cast- may be made to fill the cavity exactly. This is secured in place by cement. The trouble is thait no cement yet invented is proof against the dissolving power of the fluids in the mouth. Acordingly, this process of "inlaying," as it is called, must remain to a great extent un- available until a non-soluble cement shall be discovered.
