De la melancolía a la locura: embarazo, parto y posparto (España y el mundo hispánico, siglos XVI-XVII)

Abstract

Si bien hoy se conocen y tratan científicamente los problemas psicológicos derivados del embarazo y del parto, este trabajo trata de analizar cómo se abordaron estos en la España de la temprana Edad Moderna. Para ello se parte del concepto de “melancolía” según la tratadística de los siglos XVI y XVII, y se analizan los ejemplos contenidos en una fuente de gran interés, como son las vidas de santos y libros de milagros publicados en español en ese período. Esta fuente nos revela cómo se procuraba atender, mediante el consuelo y la empatía, las necesidades físicas y psicológicas de la mujer

Although today the psychological problems derived from pregnancy and childbirth are scientifically well known and treat-ed, this paper attempts to analyze how these were addressed in Spain in the Early Modern period. In order to carry it out, we start from the concept of “melancholy” according to medical and theological treatises of 16th and 17th centuries, and we study the examples contained in a source of great interest, such as the lives of saints and books of miracles published in Spanish in that period. This source reveals to us how the physical and psychological needs of women were sought through consolation and empathy.
