"Much Ado about Nothing" and the Spectator
In a foreword to a collection of essays entitled Reinterpretations of Elizabethan Drama, Norman Rabkin makes the following generalization about the contributors: " ... all of them discuss the play as earlier critics neither could nor wanted to: the play as it impinges on its audience, as it is experienced." That is what I am going to do in this essay: to discuss Much Ado about Nothing as it is experienced by an audience.
