A first-year evaluation of the Hollywood High School (SWAS) alternative education program

A descriptive program evaluation was conducted of the Hollywood High School SWAS Alternative Education Program. Ten evaluation objectives were considered to determine: whether or not the parents and students were satisfied with the program; if the curriculum, staff, and physical plant were adequate for program needs; to determine the motivation and amount of participation in the program; the perceived effectiveness of the governing bodies; whether or not the program objectives are being met; and what were the prevalent recommendations for continuation and expansion. The subjects of the study included: 125 of the 165 students in the Alternative School's student body completing the Student Questionnaire; 39 of the parents responding to the Parent Questionnaire; and 6 staff members answering the Staff Interview Schedule. The major findings were as follows: the majority of the students surveyed are satisfied with the program; the curriculum is adequate, but the staffing and physical plants are not for program needs; dissatisfaction with the regular school was the greatest motive for enrollment in the program, but participation was less than active; the perceived effectiveness of the governing bodies is very poor; it appears that the program objectives are being met, but there is lack of consensus as to their definition; and prevalent recommendations for improvement are in the areas of staffing and new student selection procedures.
