Computer simulation of underbuoy hoses

The method of influence coefficients and relaxation was utilized in a computer program designed to perform a two dimensional deflection analysis of underbuoy hose systems. This iteration technique proved to converge rapidly to an accurate solution of the large deflections inherent in the normal usage of the long flexible hose strings. The program was compared with a previously used finite element program designed to accomplish the same task. As a result of the comparison between the two programs, the finite element program was examined more closely and was found to be unreliable. The new program proved to be a useful design tool on several practical applications. Plans were formulated to expand the program to a three dimensional analysis and to incorporate some loading cases not considered in the research and development version.
