If you were a vitamin, what would you be? : poems about vitamins, an educational tool

Proceeding on the assumption that there is a definite need for more non-traditional and creative material in the field of nutrition, the author selected a small area of nutrition, the vitamins, and created one poem about each of the vitamins, utilizing human and animal characters that young children could easily relate to. Included in the collection of poems was one about vitamins in general, one about fat soluble vitamins as a group and, finally, one about water soluble vitamins as a group. Once having created the poems, the writer then chose a sample randomly, and read this sample to five Horne Economics classes at California State University, Northridge, in September, 1978. Written and verbal responses were obtained from the students of these classes and the collected data were tabulated. The overwhelming positive responses of the students indicated their approval of the concept of using material like the sample presented and their liking for the sample itself. Finally it also indicated that if this and other similar material were available to people in teaching situations they would be used.
