An adaptation for the stage of E. B. White's Charlotte's Web

The purpose of this project was to write a dramatic adaptation of a children's story for presentation to young audiences. I choose the story of Charlotte's Web, by E. B. White because I found it had a wonderful way of dealing with all of the most important issues of life: growing up; death; interpersonal relationships; the cycles of life and, most of all, friendship. In the original story these subjects are presented with care and concern, and from a point of view which children can readily understand and easily identify. In my adaptation I have attempted to present, on stage, what E. B. White told so brilliantly in his book, the story of true friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. There are several important themes in the story: birth and parenthood; the pain and labor of creating new life; the possibility of friendship between very different individuals; the existence of evil as well as the potential of coexistence; overcoming difficult and apparently impossible situations and finally the use of group action to accomplish goals.
