The Fibonacci numbers and golden section in selected music of Béla Bartók

Bela Bartok's music is balanced with a sense of intuition and a sense of logical order, and it is this logical order based on the Fibonacci numbers and golden section which will be examined. According to Erno Lendvai, the Fibonacci numbers and golden section provide organization in music in terms of form, a synthetic scale called the Fibonaccian scale, patterns of durational value, and lengths of movements. This study will examine and evaluate Lendvai's analysis of Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and Fourth String Quartet as well as the work of other theorists and mathematicians to determine whether the Fibonacci numbers and golden section influenced these selected pieces.
