Exploring the impact of an intergenerational music group on elders

This study explores the effects of an intergenerational music group on elders. This exploratory study used pre-group and post-group interviews to collect data from seven elders who participated in a four-week intergenerational music group. The interviews explored quality of life, importance of music, intergenerational interactions and cross-age attitudes, and the perceived benefits of elders who participated in the group. Results from qualitative data revealed that the elders received benefits such as new relationships, decreased isolation, having a new and meaningful experience to look forward to each week, and feeling better after each group. Suggestions for future research are discussed.
