JANUS V. AFSCME: Right to Work Toolkit

The Supreme Court’s decision in Janus V. AFSCME ruled that fair share fees in public sector unions are now unconstitutional. This decision overturned a 1978 court ruling in Abood V. Detroit Board of Education. The American labor movement finds itself in a quintessential moment, where internal organizing has become of extreme importance to the survival of unions. I would like to create an internal organizing toolkit that is meant for union leadership and will be able to recruit and empower union members to be involved in their respective locals. This toolkit will include a literature review outlining how the problem got to be where we are today, as well as interviews from union leadership who see the challenges and opportunities with this court decision. The toolkit will also include best practices in recruiting members as well as data that shows the differences between right to work states, and non-right to work states.
