Abstract
MAELSTROM is a poetic memoir concerned with the question "what difference does the difference make." It examines the ripple effects caused by how we compliment and contradict one another. How differences can be created by the smallest thing—a quiet gesture or turn of phrase—and yet can still have an effect of great magnitude. As a poetic memoir, the collection draws from my experiences as a multiracial individual living in Alberta, as well as my relationship with Morocco. My knowledge of the languages I have been surrounded by growing up—and the places I have learned them—point to and form me as writer. One focused on how narratives of self contradict as they assert themselves. How they form, reform, unform, deform and inform ideas we have of ourselves and our surroundings. MAELSTROM plays with the limits and failures of language while also celebrating the ability to articulate silence.
