Da afirmação de uma «questão urbana» à produção das primeiras respostas urbanísticas do Estado: crise sanitária, movimento higienista e estruturação do campo burocrático perspetivadas a partir do Porto

Abstract

This article explores the preconditions and modes of affirmation and strengthening of the role of the state in urbanism and urban intervention, taking as reference and example the case of the city of Porto, in Portugal. The sanitary crisis that follows the surge of bubonic plague observed in this city in 1899 is the motto for the development of an analysis on the relevance of the hygienist movement in the production and dissemination of a new way of envisaging the state's intervention in the city and in the structuring of the bureaucratic field that this specific historic period testifies.
