Border crossings, identities, and creative nonfiction : Haitian travel guides and writing about Haiti
Abstract
In my thesis, I explore the practice of travel writing by examining four separate travel guides. I ask how writing about travel, including my own creative writing about Haiti, interacts with issues of identity, the \"other,\" and narrative distancing. Then, I discuss how the form of the essay, when brought to travel writing, can open new doors for a self-aware and deliberate way of writing about place.
