Abstract
i
Nowadays, with brisk research on 2D materials, angstrom scale small gap
has been created. These systems have an optical feature in common, which
is high confinement of electromagnetic wave between gap. The optical responses
of general bulk metal can be calculated by simple Drude model
in classical electrodynamics. If a sub-nm gap is generated in bulk metal,
we should consider quantum mechanical effects like electron tunneling and
simple Drude model cannot be applied to this system. To approach theoretically
and to investigate optical responses of this system is the purpose of
this paper.
First, to calculate the optical responses, we adapted and solved effectivemass
quantum theory. Using solved electron eigenenergies and eigenstates
in a metal with sub-nm gaps, we could get dielectric function of the system.
For the numerical simulation, we chose copper as a simulation metal
31
to reproduce experimently created system in laboratory. We set the number
of kx-grid as twenty, and the temperature of the system as T →0 after confirming
convergence on these parameters. For the simplicity of calculation,
we set the system as a superlattice that have periodic sub-nm gaps in metal
bulk.
The dielectric function of a metal with sub-nm gap can be divded into
two sorts. The first one is the dielectric function in direction parallel with
the gap (ε//), and this parallel dielectric function is almost the same as that
of simple bulk metal. The second one is the dielectric function in direction
perpendicular to the gap (ε⊥), and this is significantly different from the
dielectric function of a simple bulk metal. That is the reason why we concentrated
on the perpendicular dielectric function ε⊥ along this paper. With
interpretation of dielectric function, we provided valid explanations that the
calculation on superlattices with infinite thickness is also applicable to the
cases of simple one gap system of finite thickness.
To see the role of the momentum matrix elements of the system on
the large change from the dielectric function of the simple metal bulk, we
also provided the dielectric function results in which the matrix elements
were set constant value. We found that the momentum matrix elements plays
an important role and several features of the dielectric function can be explained
by the properties of the matrix elements.
Using dielectric function we could calculate the complex refractive indices
and the penetration depth of the metal with sub-nm gaps. Imaginary
part of the complex refractive index of the system was much smaller than
that of simple bulk metal. As a result, the penetration depth of the system
32
with sub-nm gaps became much longer. When the length of the metal part is
100 nm and the length of the gap part is 3 ˚A , gap occupies only 0.3 % volumetric
fraction but increase the penetration depth by an order of magnitude
in the terahertz wave regime.
