부모의 정서적 불인정과 표출 정서가 내면화 및 외현화 문제에 미치는 영향

Abstract

성장기 동안의 부모와 자녀 간 정서적 상호작용은 자녀가 성인이 된 이후에도 심리적 건강에 지속적인 영향을 미친다. 자녀의 정서를 인정해주지 않는 것과 반복적으로 자녀에게 부정적인 정서를 표출하는 것은 자녀가 적절한 정서조절능력을 습득하는 것을 어렵게 만들고, 이후 우울, 불안 등의 내면화 문제와 공격 행동 등의 외현화 문제로 이어질 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 자녀의 정서에 대한 부모의 불인정(emotional invalidation)을 측정할 수 있는 척도를 번안하고 타당화하였으며, 정서적 불인정, 표출 정서, 정서조절 곤란, 내면화 문제, 외현화 문제의 관계를 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증하였다. 연구 1에서는 정서적 불인정을 측정하기 위해 개발된 지각된 정서적 불인정 척도(Perceived Invalidation of Emotion Scale: PIES

Zielinski, 2016)를 번안한 후에 신뢰도 및 타당도를 확인하였다. 199명의 대학생 및 대학원생에게 실시한 결과, 아버지와 어머니에 대한 척도 모두 원척도 요인구조와 동일하게 1요인으로 구성된 것을 확인하였다. 두 척도의 신뢰도는 적절한 수준이었으며 수렴 타당도 역시 양호한 수준이었다. 상관분석에서 정서적 불인정은 우울, 불안, 공격성과 정적 상관을 보였다. 연구 2에서는 아버지 및 어머니의 정서적 불인정과 표출 정서가 내면화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 과정을 정서조절 곤란이 매개하는지 알아보기 위해 248명의 대학생 및 대학원생 자료를 구조방정식 모형을 활용하여 분석하였다. 아버지의 정서적 불인정은 자녀의 내면화 문제에 영향을 미치고. 표출 정서와 내면화 및 외현화 문제 사이에서 정서조절 곤란이 완전매개 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 어머니의 표출 정서가 내면화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 경로에서 정서조절 곤란이 완전매개 하였다. 이러한 모든 효과는 신경증 성향과 외향성 성격 변인을 통제한 후에도 유의미하였다. 신경증 성향을 포함해 분석했을 때는, 부모의 정서적 불인정과 자녀의 신경증 성향이 상호작용하여 내면화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 과정을 정서조절곤란이 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 부모의 성별과 자녀의 성별이 상호작용하여 자녀의 행동 문제에 차별적인 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 정서적 불인정을 측정하는 척도를 국내에 도입하고, 부모의 정서적 불인정과 표출 정서가 대학생 자녀의 내면화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 정서조절 곤란과 신경증 성향의 역할을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 시사점 및 한계점과 추후 연구를 위한 제언에 대해 논의하였다.

Emotional interaction between parents and children during childhood has a continuing impact on psychological health. In this study, PIES(the Perceived Invalidation of Emotion Scale), a measure to assess parental emotional invalidation toward children, was translated and validated, and relationships among emotional invalidation, expressed emotion, emotion dysregulation, and internalizing and externalizing problems were examined. In study 1, PIES(the Perceived Invalidation of Emotion Scale

Zielinski, 2016) was translated and validated in a sample of 199 college and graduate students. The scale was found to consist of one factor, and showed adequate reliability and convergent validity. Emotional invalidation score showed positive correlations with depression, anxiety, and aggression scores. In study 2, the mediating effects of emotional dysregulation in the relationships between parental emotional invalidation and expressed emotion and internalizing-externalizing problems were examined in a sample of 248 college and graduate students. As the results, paternal emotional invalidation affected childrens internalizing problems, while emotional dysregulation fully mediated the relationships between paternal expressed emotion and internalizing -externalizing problems. It was also revealed that emotional dysregulation fully mediated the relationships between maternal expressed emotion and internalizing-externalizing problems. All of the effects were significant even when the effects of neuroticism and extroversion were controlled. Additionally, the interaction effects of parental emotional invalidation and neuroticism on internalizing and externalizing problems were significant, and the emotional dysregulation partially mediated these effects. It was also confirmed that parental emotional invalidation and expressed emotion have discriminatory effects on the behavior of their children, depending on the gender of the parents and their children. The present study has an implication in that it introduced PIES, a measure of emotional invalidation, in Korea, and examined the impact of parental emotional invalidation and expressed emotion on childrens psychological problems and the roles of emotion regulation and neuroticism. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study and suggestions for further studies were discussed.
