Abstract
We investigate the magnetic state on the edge of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard
model. On the edge of a graphene nanoribbon it has been known that the
ferromagnetic ordering is induced by the electron-electron interactions while
a certain spin-orbit interaction gives rise to a gapless current-
owing state
without electron-electron interactions. We use Hartree-Fock approximation to
examine the nature of edge states in the presence of the Hubbard interaction in
the Kane-Mele model. We compute local magnetizations of a nanoribbon with
various widths and obtain the edge phase diagram with four di_x000B_erent phases
for the ribbons of _x000C_nite width and study how the magnetic properties are affected
by electron-electron interactions. In particular, we show that the edge
magnetic order survives for weak spin-orbit interaction in the thermodynamic
limit. The edge magnetic order penetrates towards the ribbon center. The
resulting magnetic pro_x000C_le gives its characteristic length which is found to be
strongly a_x000B_ected by both electron-electron interactions and spin-orbit interactions.
The variation of its characteristic length turns out to be closely related
to the phase transition between topological insulator and antiferromagnetic
insulator.
