Abstract
One of the most critical issues in naval architecture these days is operational safety. For higher safety level requirement, the hull stability in intact and damaged conditions in seaway is of utmost importance. However, the assessment of damaged ship stability is very complicated because the dynamic behavior of a damaged ship and the water flooding process are complex physical phenomena. When a ship is damaged, the ship motion is affected by the flooding water, and conversely, the flooding water motion is influenced by the ship motion. For this reason, it is widely acknowledged that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are the only viable approach to simulate and analyze the complex physical phenomena. In order to develop better CFD methods for damaged ship stability assessment, experimental data for validation is essential. Although many research activities are being reported on damaged ship stability recently, most of them are not designed for validation of CFD studies. Therefore, well-designed model tests should be performed to build a CFD validation database. Free roll decay tests in calm water with both intact and damaged ships were performed and the roll motion characteristics were compared. The damaged ship showed a larger roll damping coefficient and more rapid decrease of roll amplitude than the intact ship. The primary reason of these efforts can be explained by the movement of the flooded water. In the present study, the experimental data for the roll motion and flooding water height were organized as a database for CFD validation along with uncertainty assessment results. The selected hull form for the present study was that of a passenger ship, provided by Ship Stability Research Center (SSRC) of University of Strathclyde in the UK. A combination of the accelerometers and the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) was used to measure the motion of the model ship. An array of capacitance type wave probes was placed in damaged compartment to measure the height of the flooding water.
