디지털 네트워크 시대의 그래픽 디자인 현상연구

Abstract

지난 반세기를 돌아보면 디지털 기술 환경은 사회·문화·경제·정치 구조 전반의 변화와 함께 인류의 삶에 획기적인 변화를 가져다주었다. 매체와 그래픽 디자인 역시 컴퓨터, 디지털 네트워크, 그리고 스마트폰의 대중화와 함께 새로운 패러다임(paradigm)으로 이행을 지속해왔다. 새롭게 등장한 매체는 그래픽 디자이너에게 기술과 내용 면에서 다양한 형식과 방법을 시도하며 변화를 모색하게 했다. 이 과정에서 전통적 매체의 존재 가치를 일부 상실하기도 했지만, 새로운 매체로의 완벽한 전환이 아닌 상호보완적 관계에서 서로 조화를 이루며 앞으로 한발 나아가게 된 것은 분명한 사실이다. 이 점은 가상과 실재의 세계가 어우러진 우리의 일상 공간과도 부합한다.

연구자는 이와 같은 상황에서 전통적 매체와 새로운 매체, 물질성과 비물질성, 그리고 가상성과 실재성의 조화가 그래픽 디자인 형식과 내용에 중요한 의미를 지닌다는 점에 주목한다. 이것은 또 다른 방향의 이행이다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 그 이행 과정을 학문적으로 살펴보기 위해 과거와 현재의 기술 환경과 시각 문화 현상을 이론 고찰하고, 현시점 디지털 네트워크 환경이 가져다준 전통적 매체와 새로운 매체 간 이행·변이(transition) 과정을 그래픽 디자이너의 관점에서 사례 분석한다. 결과적으로 본 논문은 기술의 발전을 기반으로 위와 같이 상반된 것들의 중첩(superimposition) 관계가 만들어내는 잠재적 가치를 탐구하기 위한 그래픽 디자인 작품 연구다.

Looking back over the last half century, the digital technology environment has brought a dramatic change in the lives of mankind along with changes in social, cultural, economic and political structures. Media and graphic design have also continued to transition to a new paradigm with the popularization of computers, digital networks, and smartphones. The newly emerged media has allowed graphic designers to seek change by attempting various forms and methods in terms of technology and content. In this process, some of the existing values of traditional media were lost, but it is clear that they step forward in harmony with each other in a complementary relationship rather than a perfect transition to a new media. This point is also consistent with our daily space where virtual and real worlds are harmonized.

In such a situation, the researcher notes that the harmony of traditional and new media, materiality and immateriality, and virtuality and reality has an important meaning in the form and content of graphic design. This is the transition of another direction. Accordingly, this study theoretically examines the past and present technological environments and visual culture phenomena in order to study the transition process academically and analyzes the transition process between traditional media and new media brought by the digital network environment at this time from the perspective of graphic designers. As a result, this thesis is a study of graphic design works to explore the potential value created by the superimposed relationship of the above conflicting things based on the development of technology.
