Abstract
As the innovative technologies are introduced into the retail environment to enrich the consumers' experience and help them in the process of decision-making, it is necessary to understand how consumers respond to the environment where technology is applied. Augmented reality technology, as an immersive technology, merges virtual content to the environment where the consumer is located in real-time and helps consumers to easily experience the mediated environment with their mobile devices. With the introduction of augmented reality technology, both online and offline in the fashion industry, consumers can interact with fashion brands in their daily lives and get vivid information about the product.
A retail environment in which augmented reality is applied can play important crucial roles for consumers in searching for and acquiring information about fashion products. However, research on augmented reality in the fashion field is still in its early stage and has focused on the values of augmented reality technology at a basic level. Also, little studies have examined how different types of product information affect consumers psychological responses in the context of a shopping environment to which augmented reality is applied. Therefore, it is essential to examine the paths which consist of consumers' psychological responses in the retail environment in which the technology is introduced in a more detailed way. In particular, given that the attribute of the product has been regarded as an important factor that affects consumers' emotions, choices, and brand attitudes, it is critical to understand the effect of fashion products attribute information on consumers responses in augmented reality.
In this regard, this study examines the impact of presence and fashion products attribute information on product evaluation in augmented reality. First, the present study investigates the effect of presence and fashion products attribute information on imagery and information fulfillment. In addition, this study explores how presence and products attribute information affect product evaluation by mediating imagery, information fulfillment, and psychological ownership. At the same time, the study identifies a moderating role of consumers technological innovativeness in the effect of presence on consumers responses in augmented reality.
Experiments and online surveys were conducted with consumers in their 20s and 30s who had online or mobile shopping experience. Based on the preliminary research, the augmented reality application that provides the virtual fitting service with sneakers was selected as the stimulus to be experienced by research participants. During the experiments, participants experienced sneakers through augmented reality applications with their mobile devices in an environment they were familiar with and then responded to the questionnaire. The SPSS 24.0 program and Mplus 7.0 program were used for analyses.
The findings of the study based on the collected 93 responses showed the positive effect of presence on imagery and information fulfillment. Moreover, consumers felt a higher imagery when provided with utilitarian attribute information than with hedonic attribute information. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the level of information fulfillment according to the type of products attribute information. Secondly, both imagery and information fulfillment had a positive effect on product evaluation, and each relationship was mediated by psychological ownership. Additionally, the relationship between presence and product evaluation was sequentially mediated by imagery and psychological ownership. The relationship between presence and product evaluation was also sequentially mediated by information fulfillment and psychological ownership. Products attribute information was found to affect product evaluation by sequentially mediating imagery and psychological ownership. Consumers who were provided with utilitarian attribution information felt a higher imagery, which led to a higher psychological ownership and a more positive product evaluation. Lastly, consumers technological innovativeness significantly moderated the effect of the presence on imagery and also the effect of presence on psychological ownership.
The current study provides several academic and practical implications. This study shows that augmented reality technology can effectively help consumers make decisions when exploring fashion products. This study gives critical insights to fashion brands that they should develop virtual fitting services by considering the characteristics of augmented reality and the components that can be merged with the technology in a more holistic perspective of views. In addition, this study suggests that augmented reality marketing in consideration of the characteristics of media and consumers can make consumers have higher imagery, information fulfillment, and psychological ownership which ultimately leads to a more positive evaluation of products. These findings help brands to build effective marketing strategies using technology to form an intimate and close relationship with consumers in the long-term.
As limitations, this study presented product attribute information as a scenario. However, it would be more ideal to directly implement the product's attribute information in augmented reality to identify consumers' responses more clearly. Moreover, in this study, participants experienced the augmented reality application at places where they felt comfortable and were familiar. In specific, most participants tried on the product at home, but some of them experienced at other places such as workplaces. Accordingly, it would be interesting to study deeper on how places and contexts in which consumers use augmented reality affect their responses.
