고립된 판타지를 통한 캐릭터화된 타자에 관한 연구 : 나의 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

나의 작업은 타자를 바라보는 사회의 시선에 대한 문제의식에서 출발한다. 그 문제의식을 드러내는 일에 내가 쓰는 방법에는 여러 가지가 있다. 비꼬기, 은유, 선언, 울음 터뜨리기, 평정 유지하기 등 수단과 방법을 가리며 그 때의 상황에 따라 다른 방식을 취한다. 또한 타자를 하나의 캐릭터로 상상하는 것에서부터 시작해 그들이 어떤 대화를 나누고 어떤 삶을 사는지에 대한 상상으로 작업의 서사를 만들어낸다. 내가 상상해 낸 괴물인 척하는 소녀와 소녀인 척하는 괴물은 게임이나 만화에서 받은 영향을 숨기지 않으면서 타자의 삶과 타자가 삶을 살아가는 방식, 사회가 그들을 대하는 방식을 토로한다.

그 후에는 비뚤어진 타자를 기반으로 한 이질적인 작품들을 한데 그러모아 유동적이고 가벼운 설치를 한 뒤, 그 속에서 타자들이 사는 환상의 세계에 관한 상상을 이어 나간다. 그곳은 나의 상상력을 기반으로 만들어낸 세상으로, 타자들이 마음껏 공동체로서 기쁨과 슬픔을 누리는 곳이다. 나는 그 세계에서 타자들의 삶과 그들의 존재의미에 관한 실마리, 그들이 자유롭게 살 수 있는 방법을 찾는다. 그 실마리란 양가성에 관한 것이고, 여러 입으로 여러 말을 하는 것이며, 고정되지 못하는 정체성의 고정되지 않아도 됨에 관한 것이다. 그것은 타자의 담론에서 그치는 것이 아니라 오브제로서의 회화, 예술과 삶을 살아가는 방식까지 이어진다. 완성되지 않아도 되는 작품과 그와 이어지는 자유롭고 가벼운 삶의 태도는 나의 예술에서 중요한 자리를 차지하고 있다.

My art practice starts from realizing the social views of people. I have several methods for revealing this critical portion of their minds: being sarcastic, metaphoric, making pronouncements, crying, and staying calm. In the end, different ways are applied by any means. Moreover, by starting from conceptualizing others as characters, the narrative is built in my imagination of how they live and communicate. According to my imagination, a girl who pretends to be a monster and a monster who pretends to be a girl represent how people live and how society sees them, not by hiding their influence with a game or cartoon. Then, different works based on these crooked people are collected into one character to be flexible and light, and my imaginary story about the illusion where they live continues. It is the world based on my imagination where everyone enjoys happiness and sadness as much as they want within a community. In this world, I look for peoples lives, clues about the meaning of existence, and a way that they can freely live.

This clue is about ambivalence, something about telling different things with different mouths, and how an identity that cannot be fixed does not have to be fixed. It is not finished with a discussion of others but continues with a painting as an object and as a way of art and life. An artwork that does not have to be finished and, in this respect, the free and light attitude of life takes an important position in my art practice.
