Abstract

Based on quite different social, historical, and philosophical backgrounds, Catholicism and Buddism seem to represent two different sides of cultures. Ironically, in Korea, however, we frequently see many cases of conversion from Catholic to Buddhist, from Buddhist to Catholic. Can this phenomenon become a proof that there is much affinity between Catholicism and Buddhism' To answer to the question, we might need a more radical question on the nature of Catholicism and Buddhism. Rather than to give a direct answer to the question, this paper takes a detour by comparing the idea of salvation between Catholicism and Buddhism especially through Jinul's philosophy. On the way to find out of similarities on their ideas of salvation between Catholicism and Jinul, we might delve into the uncovered affinity between Catholicism and Buddhism.
