통일신라 관음보살상 연구 시론

Abstract

다양한 형태의 신앙과 사상으로 이어진 한국불교사에서 자주 언급되는 중요한 신앙대상 중 하나로 관음보살을 빼놓을 수 없다. 불교의 대중화가 이뤄진 것으로 평가되는 통일신라 불교사에서 신앙의 중심은 아미타불과 관음보살에 있었다고 이야기된다. 아미타와 관음신앙의 융성은 중국 당대도 마찬가지였으며, 석가와 미륵에 대한 신앙이 중심이었던 삼국시대와는 달라진 점이라고 생각된다. 한국 고대 불교사 연구는 『삼국유사』에 근거를 두고 진행되었기 때문에 통일신라의 불교신앙이 아미타와 관음에 집중 되었다는 것도 『삼국유사』에 기반을 둔 것이다. 이러한 문헌사 입장과 관련되는 통일신라의 불교미술 연구도 적잖이 진행되었다. 특히 아미타 신앙에 대해서는 문헌 외에도 계유락전씨아미타삼존비상처럼 아미타라는 명문이 새겨진 조각들이 삼국 통일 직후부터 여러 점 조성된 것이 확인되었고, 연구되었기 때문에 아미타 신앙의 융성을 뒷받침한다. 아미타 신앙에 관한 문헌과 미술이 일치한다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 기록과 미술 양쪽에서 아미타 신앙의 융성과 아미타상의 조성이 동시에 이뤄진 것을 확인할 수 있고, 그에 따라 아미타상에 대한 미술사적 연구도 적지않게 진행되었다.

Avalokiteśvara(Guanseum, 관세음 in Korean) is one of the famous bodhisattvas in the Mahayana Buddhism(대승불교). He has made a great vow to listen to the prayers of all sentient beings in times of difficulty. According to Samguk-yusa(삼국유사), lots of people in the Unified Silla Period(통일신라시대) believed and prayed to Avalokiteśvara. Some people prayed to have a son, and some people wanted not to fall into the perils. Murim(무림) in the King Sunduk(선덕) period, had prayed to Avalokiteśvara to have a son, and he got a boy named Jajang(자장). Jangchun(장춘)s Mother Bogae wanted for her son to come back safely, so she prayed to Avalokiteśvara from her heart. Like these stories, there are many stories related to the Avalokiteśvara faith in Samguk-yusa. Even if the faith in the Avalokiteśvara was flourished in those times, the images of Avalokiteśvara were not yet known to the people in nowadays. Many images of Avalokiteśvara in those days might have been painted ones, which were easily lost.
