Abstract
In this paper, 1 would like to explore the correlations between segment and accent type in Middle Korean. Based on the correlations, the underlying form of verbs which has imperfect paradigm can be set up. In
Middle Korean one syllble verbs fall into 6 classes by accentual pattern. Class L, H, R show only one allomorph whose pitch is low, high, and low-high. Class L! show accentual pattern LLX('L' means low pitch, 'X' 1S variables) when it is followed by binding vowel ʌ/ɯ Class R! verbs alternate R('R' means low-high pitch) before consonant and L before vowel. Class H! alternate L and H('H' means high pitch) according to the following endings. The correlations between segment and accent are as follows. If the
initial consonant of the verbs were aspirated, glotalized, or consonant cluster, the verb would belong to Class H. When the stem final consonant is voiceless, the verb belong to Class L or Class R, but the stem final consonant is h, ß, z, t/r, the verb belong to Class R! or L!. Other irregular verbs which has segmental structure 'X m, z, r + ʌ/ɯ' are a11 atonic. They are usually two syllable verbs. From these correlations, we can infer underlying form of some verbs which have imperfect paradigm.
