문화지리학의 새로운 방향 : 이론과 논쟁

Abstract

1980년을 전후로 한 시기에 소위 신문화지리학 이라고 하는 새로운 흐름이 싹트기 시작하였다. 신문화지리학자들은 문화를 인간의 삶에서 중심적인 범주로 그리고 사회변동이 경험되고 경합되며 구성되는 매체로 본다. 신문화지리학은 문화유물론을 비롯한 영국의 문화연구, Geertz의 해석학적 문화론, Saussure의 언어학과 Jakobson의 시학에 토대를 둔 문화 기호론, 그리고 문학 이론 등의 영향을 받았다. 전통문화지리학과 신문화지리학의 논쟁은 근본적으로 문화에 대한 관점의 차이에서 비롯되었으나, 신문화지리학은 전통문화지리학으로부터의 단절이라기보다는 새로운 발전의 계기를 마련하려는 시도로 해석 될 수있다. 한국사회에서 문화지리학의 다양한 연구들이 사회적 의미를 획득하기위해서는 역사적이고 공간적이고 농촌적인 것뿐만 아니라 현대적이고 사회적이고 도시적인 것에 더욱 더 관심을 기울여야 한다.

A new strand in cultural geography, so called 'new cultural geography' , has begun to grow since around 1980. New cultural geographers understand culture as a central realm of life, and the very medium through which social changes are experienced, contested, and constituted. New cultural geography borrowed some of its theoretical core from cultural studies in United Kingdom such as cultural materialism, Geertz' s interpretative theory of culture, cultural semiotics based on Saussure' s linguistic structuralism and lakobson' s poetics, and literary theory. Even though the debates between traditional cultural geography and new cultural geography resulted from their different viewpoints on culture, the new one can be considered as an attempt to develop rather than to deny the traditional one. In Korea, various researches in cultural geography can be socially meaningful when they are focused on 'the contemporary, social, urban' as well as 'the historical, spatial, rural'.
