『최고선과 최고악』에 나타난 스토아학파의 윤리학교 구아가데미학파의 윤리학

Abstract

논리학-물리학-윤리학으로 구성되는 헬레니즘 철학체계에서 윤리학은 정점에 위치 한다. 키케로는 이런 철학체계에 따라 자신의 작품세계를 구상하는데, 윤리학에 관한 작품이 「최고선과 최고악」이다. 그는 이 작품을 어느 작품보다 중요한 것으로 여겼다. 왜냐하면 인간의 행복에 직결되는 최고선이 다루어지고 있기 때문이다. 그는 여기서 에피쿠로스 학파, 스토아학파, 구아카데미학파의 윤리학을 소개하고 비판하고 있는데, 그의 주된 관심은 스토아학파의 윤리학과 구아카데미학파의 윤리학의 경합관계에 놓여있다. 본 논문은 두 학파의 윤리학의 특징을 철학체계, 카르네아데스의 윤리학설 분류법, 인간본성과 도덕발전, 최고선과 행복의 네 가지 주요한 관점에서 비교·분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 키케로는 단지 윤리학에 대한 검토만 제시할 뿐, 어떤 특정한 최고선을 선택할 것을 독자에게 요구하지 않는다. 최고선을 선택하는 것은 행복하길 바라는 우리의 몫이다.

In the Hellenistic philosophical system composed of logic-physics-ethics, ethics locates at the top. Cicero wrote lots of philosophical works in keeping with the Hellenistic philosophical system, of which On Moral Ends is on ethics. He said thai no one will judge that any is more worth reading than this work. This work has a significant importance because in it the chief good which is directly related to human happiness is carefully examined. In it, Cicero introduces and criticizes each ethics of Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Old Academy_ His main interest lies in the competitive relationship between the Stoic ethics and the Old Academy's ethics. This paper aims at analyzing comparatively the main traits of two ethical theories from the four points of ( I) Hellenistic philosophical system, (2)Camedes' classification of ethics, (3) human nature and moral development, and (4) the chief good and happiness. In On Moral Ends, what Cicero had done is only to provide the readers with knowledge of the chief good, not to requiring them to adopt a specific chief good. It is our responsibility to choose the chief good for our happiness.
