지배와 저항의 문자 : 서구 중세사회를 중심으로

Abstract

문자가 발명되고 그 사용이 드물었던 시대에 예수는 구전으로 복음을 전한다. 예수의 시대에 문자의 사용자는 극소수였고, 문자를 기록하는 매체가 귀한 시대였다. 예수의 말씀은 곧 문자로 기록되어 경전으로 발전되었으며, 경전을 해석하고 보존하는 임무를 성직자들이 맡게 되었다. 그들이 문자로 기록된 성서와 중세의 공용어였던 라틴어를 독점하고, 그것을 수단으로 평신도와 대다수가 문맹인 백성들을 지배했다. 대학의 설립, 종이의 유입, 도시계급의 성장 등은 문자를 매체로 중세를 지배했던 교회와 수도원의 권력을 약화시켰다. 문자사용을 독점하고 있었던 교회는 여러 가지 방법을 동원해서 평신도를 통제하려고 노력했다. 그 대표적 사례가 성서금지 정책이었다. 성서가 이해하기 어렵고, 왜곡의 위험도 항시 도사리고 있기 때문에 평신도는 성서를 구입하거나 읽지 말고, 교회를 통해 성서를 이해하라는 것이 성서금지 정책의 주 내용인데, 특히 성서가 독일어같은 민중어로 번역되는 것을 엄격히 통제하였다. 그러나 이런 정책은 인쇄술의 도움으로 문자사용이 엄청나게 증가함으로써 유지하기 힘든 정책이 되었다. 문자가 소수의 독점으로 인한 지배의 매체에서 다수의 사용을 통한 저항의 매체로 변신하게 되었다. 이런 역사적 사실의 결과물이 종교개혁이다. 인쇄술이라는 대량복제 기술과 종교개혁이라는 성서 다시읽기 운동을 통해 문자는 예술품에서 대중매체로 거듭나게 되었다.

In an age when written language was new and sparsely used, the Gospel was spread orally by Jesus Christ. The words of Christ were soon put down into what became scriptures; and the job of interpreting and preserving the holy words fell on the clergy. They monopolized the written scripture and Latin - the mediaeval common tongue - thereby holding dominance over the laymen and the largely illiterate commoners. The establishment of universities and growth of the urban population undermined the churches and monasteries. The exclusive employers of scripture attempted to control the laymen through various means. A case in point was the prohibition of bibles. However, such policies disintegrated, as the use of the written language jumped with the advent of the printing technology. The lettering system had transformed from a governing tool of the exclusive to a means of resistance by the masses.
