- Abstract
- Background: The objective and valid evaluation tool is essential for nurse performance appraisal. However, at nursing
departments of hospitals, the tools were used for evaluating nurses' ability and competence, rather than nurses'
performance. Purpose: This study aims at developing standardized appraisal tool that is objective and valid in order to
evaluate nurse performance. Process: Preliminary survey was done to collect performance appraisal tools and job
descriptions existed from nursing departments of exemplary hospitals. They were analyzed and used as the basis of
performance appraisal tool. Throughout internal validity testing and content analysis, the draft of standardized nurse
performance appraisal tool was developed. It consisted of performance evaluation dimension 41 items and competence
evaluation dimension with 22 items. In order to examine reliability and validity of the draft, 590 nurses' performance
appraisal were conducted by nurse managers of the hospitals participating in this research. Conclusion: Standardized
nurse performance appraisal tool was obtained reliability with Cronbach's Alpha=0.985.
