The focus of the present Thesis lies in the design and construction of an experimental rig to conduct a series of experiments on the investigation of liquid thin film properties during the free flow over the external surface of a vertical cylinder. Liquid films are assigned to a separate and special class of flow in which the falling liquid layer has at least one free boundary thin thickness (∼ 0.1−1.0 mm) and flows under the effect of gravity and viscosity forces. Liquid film characteristics have become an increasingly important scientific and engineering topic due to the extended usage of liquid film flow in a large number of heat and mass transfer applications. Experimental and theoretical studies have proved the strong effect of waves developing on the free surface of the film in heat and mass transfer processing. In the present Thesis the fluctuation of the free film surface is considered to be a random stochastic process and therefore statistic methods of analysis are utilized. Wavy flow characteristics such as film thickness wave celerity wave length etc. are estimated as mean values of finite time samples. In the present experimental method a needle contact technique is employed and an assembly of two needle probes have been designed and implemented. Each probe movement is achieved by using two step motors directly connected to a PC Computer programming has been developed for real time measurements and data samples analysis. The experimental application focuses on the geometry and kinetic characteristics of fully developed large waves over isothermal and non-isothermal liquid film flow. It has been experimentally established that waves travel along the flow at a constant celerity without changing their shape in steady flow conditions. By increasing the volumetric flow rate of the liquid film the celerity and the height of surface waves are increased without significantly affecting the frequency of waves. Moreover, the probability of the instantaneous film thickness corresponding to mean film thickness is roughly constant ~0.4 regardless of the volumetric flow rate of the film. In the experimental study of non-isothermal flow it is indicated that the wave height and celerity are reduced comparing to the case of isothermal flow while the ratio between the wave celerity and the average film velocity remains roughly constant regardless of the volumetric film flow rate. Finally experimental results of wavy liquid film flow characteristics are summarized and compared with other theoretical and experimental studies.
