CumminsRather than being the imaginary, homogenous concept of European Orientalism, for many Australians the Orient consisted of real, ancient and lively individual civilisations. Despite, however, the Orient's spiritual and cultural inspiration, its size and Japan's increasing militarism, led to fears of invasion and a growing Australian sense of national identity.
