The symbolic value of expertise in international heritage diplomacy

Taking the practices of expertise in the UNESCO World Heritage Committee process as its case study, and contrasting this with field-based preservation practices, this paper uses the typologies of materiality and bureaucracy to assess the symbolic role and value of expertise, and how it comes to inform practices of heritage diplomacy.
