Religion in online reality. The complementarity of Catholicism and flexibility of religious narrations on the Polish Internet
Abstract
Jak zauważył niegdyś Clifford Geertz, religia jest ostatnią metanarracją, ostatnim systemem sensotwórczym, który nie zawiódł w przeszłości, nie zdezaktualizował się, nie stracił na znaczeniu. Religia przetrwała postmodernistyczną rewolucję w XX wieku i wytworzyła swoje bardziej elastyczne oblicze, które potrafi dostosować się do realiów ponowoczesności. Obecna informacyjna era jest zdeterminowana przez internet, który stał się nową warstwą rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej. Stan religii w ponowoczesnym świecie wraz z powszechnością i nieograniczonym zasięgiem internetu to główne komponenty mojej rozprawy doktorskiej. Badania, które przeprowadziłem dotyczyły tego, jak religia różnicuje się w internecie oraz jakie formy przybiera. Chciałem sprawdzić, jak internauci reagują na treści religijne w świecie online oraz jakie formy przybierają ich autorskie religijne narracje. Swoje badania ograniczyłem do polskiego internetu oraz katolicyzmu, będącego najpopularniejszym w Polsce systemem religijnym. W swojej analizie opierałem się na teorii Christophera Hellanda i modelach religion-online oraz online-religion. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy statycznego, informatycznego oblicza religii, drugi zaś religii interakcyjnej i czynnego partycypowania w ramach danego systemu religijnego. Wynikiem badań jest studium elastyczności religii w sieci oraz charakterystyczne dla niej zmienianie swojego oblicza.
As Clifford Geertz once noticed, religion is the last metanarration, the last sense-creative system that has not disappointed in the past. Religion has endured the postmodern revolution in the late 20th century and developed more flexible variant, which can adapt to the postmodern times. This information era is determined by the Internet being a whole new layer of socio-cultural reality. The condition of religion in the postmodern world and the unlimited range and impact of the Internet on human life are the two components of my PhD dissertation. The research that I conducted was about how religion is differentiated on the Internet and what forms does it takes in the online reality. I was curious how Internet users reacts to religious content online, how they produce it, and whether religion has developed some new forms in this new reality. I restricted my research field to the Polish Internet and Catholicism, the most popular religious system in Poland. I based my analisys on the two theoretical figures developed by Christopher Helland. The firsst one is religion-online, which contents the static, informational form of religion, and the second is online-religion, which deals with interactive ways of participating in the religious system. The outcome is a study of a diversity of religion online, which essence is constantly changing.
