Todos los herbicidas redujeron la cobertura bde gramíneas sobre el suelo, sin An experiment was conducted, on the high-humid zone of La Tigra de San Carlos-Costa Rica, from April to October of 1991, in order to identif the herbicide mixtures that could provide an adequate weed control and selectivity to the hot pepper. The following treatments with their respective doses were evaluated as aimed application: pendimethalin + metribuzin + paraquat (at 1.0 + 0.42 + 0.4 kg a.i./ha), pendimethalin + linuron + paraquat (at 1.0 + 1.50 + 0.4 kg a.i./ha), alachlor + metribuzin + paraquat (at 1.68 + 1.42 + 0.4 kg a.i./ha), alachlor + linuron + paraquat (at 1.68 + 1.50 + 0.4 kg a.i./ha), paraquat alone at (0.4 kg a.i./ha), and two controls: one hand-weeded according to the farmer's criteria and another as a free weed-growth control. Twenty five genera of weeds were present, being Digitaria sp. the most prevalent. The free growth of these weeds caused a 76% yield reduction of marketable peppers. All the herbicides reduced the gramineous covering on the ground, without significant differences among them. On the other hand, Experithe broad-leaf weed control was most effective in those treatments including Linuron. None of the treatments affected the crop. The chili yield of the chemical treatments was similar to the hand-weeded control.
