Après une introduction de Michael McCormik évoquant la carrière de Nikos Oikonomidès, l'ouvrage reprend vingt-neuf articles publiés par ce dernier depuis 1988, regroupés en quatre rubriques. De cet ensemble considérable on retiendra particulièrement Tun d'eux. L'article sur les commerciaires (n° 8) qui a suscité un vif débat qui n'est pas clos, car l'auteur se proposait d'expliquer les formes diverses qu'ont pris les sceaux de commerciaires entre les 6e et 10e siècles selon qu'ils étaient émis par des fermiers des douanes, des fonctionnaires ou des bureaux de l'État. 11 refusait l'hypothèse de M. Hendy, reprise par J. Haldon, selon laquelle les commerciaires des années 650-730 auraient été chargés de prélever et stocker les produits agricoles destinés aux fournitures de l'armée, faute de tout document attestant un tel lien. Cet exemple montre combien la pensée d Oikonomidès a marqué les esprits de tous ceux qui se sont occupés des structures administratives et sociales de l'Empire.
