ABSTRACT: European film historians believe that the screening of the Lumière brothers in Paris, on December 28th, 1895, inaugurated the history of cinema. Suggestively, that same day, Wilhelm Röntgen presented in Wuzburg (Germany) a new technology that made the interior of the matter visible, which he called X-rays. This article explores the parallel history of early cinema and the X-rays technology in Spain, which generated similar scientific and cultural reflections and, like the cinema, was object of a popular spectacle at a time when nobody knew about its dangers. The text finally investigates some of the cultural conditions of modernity in Spain through the emergence of these two new technologies.
