Shrnuje Válkův význam v dějinách české historiografie od 50. do 90. let 20. století, inspirace, které čerpal zejména z francouzské historiografie, jeho profesní působení na brněnské univerzitě a jeho roli jako významné intelektuální osobnosti v širším kulturním kontextu.

The chapter presents an introduction to historical thinking and historical culture in the work of Josef Válka. It summarises his role in the history of Czech historiography from the 1950s until the 1990s, his inspirations taken from French historiography, his career at the Brno university and his role as an important intellectual figure in a broader cultural context.
