Étienne-Jules Marey invented this small, yet crucial part of a large group of measuring and recording devices used with the kymograph. The instrument converts air pressure into mechanical movement and vice versa. Tambours were made in countless variations. This video illustrates the principle of operation and the preparation and use of the simplest variant of Marey's tambour.
