De bewegingen veroorzaakt door myoclonus-dystonie zijn onverstoorbaar voor sensorische stimuli. Daarnaast lijken er afwijkingen te zijn in de hersenen die je met het blote oog niet kan zien en zijn bepaalde hersengebieden specifiek verantwoordelijk voor de myoclonus. Johan van der Meer gebruikte combinaties van twee of meer meettechnieken om de hersenen te onderzoeken. Myoclonus-dystonie is een zeldzame bewegingsstoornis waarbij mensen last hebben van een soort spierkrampen (dystonie) in de nek met daarbij schokkende bewegingen in de armen (myoclonus).
