New technologies such as smartphones, instant messaging apps etc. changes the way people communicate dramatically. Both information exchange and interchanging message rely on information and communication technologies more than ever. Connecting and accessing the Internet to get online resources became easier. But workers might have psychological strain from expectation to read e-mail or reply work-related message as soon as possible. The phenomenon that work-related message can always be accessed due to the convenience of ICT, making individuals feel the urge to respond consistently is defined as workplace telepressure.
The present research investigated relationships within message-based ICT demands, workplace telepressure, work-home conflicts, in order to disclose the antecedents and consequences of workplace telepressure. Self-regulation was conducted to examine the moderating effects on the relationship between ICT demand and workplace telepressure, as well as the relationship between workplace and work-home conflicts. Time-lagged survey was completed by full-time employees in Taiwan (N=164). Analysis demonstrated that relationships within organizational message-based ICT demands, workplace telepressure, work-home conflicts were all positively related. Besides, a higher level of self-regulation may strengthen both the relationship between ICT demand and workplace telepressure, also the relationship between workplace and work-home conflicts. Regulations, policies, and solution to telepressure were provided in this study. Even usage of ICTs had been a trend, the organization still have the obligation to put efforts to help employees keep a work-life balance, particularly whom with a higher level of self-regulation.
