At present, the infections caused by the gastrointestinal nematodes represent the biggest and most serious health problem of the ovine creations, and in some situations, it is economically unfeasible for the creations. In the present experiment, the resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep of adapted and non-adapted breeds, maintained in naturally infested fields, was comparatively evaluated. For this purpose, 134 females of seven genetic groups were monitored during 20 months: Santa Inês (OSI), Dorper (ODO), Texel (OTX), Ile de France (OIF) and crosses of Santa Inês ewes with sires of the Dorper (ODS), Texel (OTS) and Ile de France (OIS) breeds. The ewes were monitored monthly regarding globular volume (GV), and eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Simultaneously, coprocultures were prepared to identify the genera of parasites present in the fecal samples. The EGP data were log10 (EPG+1) transformed to approximate the normal distribution. The data on EPG and GV were analyzed by mixed models where the fixed effects were genetic group, month and year of collection and their interactions, and the animal within the genetic group was the random effect. The variance and covariance model used for this analysis was that of heterogeneous compound symmetry. Significant (P<0.05) differences were found for all the effects tested for EPG and GV. The correlations between EPG and GV in which they were negative and significant (P <0.01) were also estimated for the observed data and for the residues. The results show that the genetic group OTS presented lower averages EPG levels compared to the other genetic groups. With respect to identification of the nematode genera, the greatest prevalence was Haemonchus spp. (85.6%), followed by Trichostrongylus spp. (10.85%), Oesophagostomum spp. (2.86%) and Cooperia spp. (0.70%). The results obtained in the present study show that the animals of the Texel breed and the products of the crossing with Santa Inês can be a good alternative for the production of sheep in the Southeastern region of Brazil, due to the lower levels of infection by gastrointestinal nematodes.
