The Immunities of Authoritarianism: The Turkish Non-Responses to COVID-19

2021-09-21
My talk will be focusing on Turkey scrutinizing the state’s responses to COVID19 from broader perspective. I will not be dealing with health policies, per se, but rather providing the broader context of the current crisis. Presently the daily number of COVID-19 cases rose to over 20.000 with number of daily fatalities exceeding 250. In the face of these numbers, I will try to identify the immunities of authoritarianism even when the worse has come to worst.

Altunışık, Meliha (Informa UK Limited, 2013-06-01)

Ironically, the issues related to this region simultaneously intensify and erode the bilateral relations. For the USA, the significance of Turkey has always related to some extent to the Middle East. For Turkey, on the other hand, during the cold war years this connection was not always welcomed. In the aftermath of the cold war, the Middle East became one of the most significant elem...

Özkan, Duygu; Eralp, Yakup Atila; Department of European Studies (2013)
This thesis explores how and why the United States (U.S.) support for Turkey’s participation in the European Union(EU) shifted from being an asset to a liability for Turkey between the years of l995 and 2005. There have been some earlier studies that analyzed the impact of U.S. support for Turkey’s inclusion in the EU on EU-Turkey relations. The purpose of this study is to contribute further to that literature with a plausible explanation for the shifting influence of the United States on EUTurkey relations...

Acar, Feride; Altunok, Gülbanu (2013-11-01)
This paper aims to review the 'politics of the intimate' in the Turkish context. By looking at regulations and policy debates in the areas of sexuality, reproduction and family and partnership in the 2000s, it critically analyzes the scope and content of state policies, as well as the policy debates in these areas, from a gender and gender equality perspective. This analysis further emphasizes the interaction between neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism, two political rationalities that have come to play imp...
