FLAME RETARDATION AND MECHANICAL-PROPERTIES OF 1,3 PROPYLENE-GLYCOL BASED UNSATURATED POLYESTER
Gündüz, Güngör; OZTURK, S (Informa UK Limited, 1994-01-01)
Flame retardance properties of 1,3 propylene glycol based unsaturated polyester containing 40% styrene and 20% acrylonitrile were investigated. The polyester with 12% Br content is self-extinguishing while others with lower bromine contents burn slowly. The high decrease in mechanical strength due to the presence of bromine is highly compensated by acrylonitrile.

Flame retardancy of poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, was improved using different flame retardant additives such as triphenylphosphate, triphenylphosphine oxide, zinc borate, and boron phosphate (BP). Composites were prepared using a twin screw extruder and subsequently injection molded for characterization purposes. The flame retardancy of the composites was determined by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test. Smoke emission during fire was also evaluated in terms of percent light transmittance. Thermal s...
Flame retardancy of polyamide compounds and micro/nano composites
Gündüz, Hüseyin Özgür; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
In the first part of this dissertation, glass fiber reinforced/unreinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) were compounded with three different flame retardants, which were melamine cyanurate, red phosphorus and brominated epoxy with antimony trioxide, by using an industrial scale twin screw extruder. Then, to investigate flame retardancy of these specimens, UL-94, Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) and Mass Loss Cone Calorimeter (MLC) tests were carried out. In addition to flammability tests, thermogra...
