Seismic strengthening is a very important problem in Turkey. Because there are a lot of buildings which do not satisfy the code requirements. So a strengthening method must be found for this kind of buildings. And it must be an easily implemented method with minimum time consuming. But the most important subject in this method is to give the minimum disturbance to the user as the strengthening actions continue. In other words, the building must function properly as strengthening takes place. On the other hand, in Turkey, since a lot of buildings have brick masonry infill walls, the combination of giving minimum disturbance and brick infill walls reveals the aim of this research. In the tests carbon fiber reinforced polymer strengthening was used to achieve this aim. The implementation of this material is very easy and the strength is very high. So the combination of carbon fiber sheets and the masonry infill walls were used in this thesis. A behaviour like a shear wall behaviour was aimed with this combination. For this purpose, two two-story, one-bay, 1/3 scale reinforced concrete frames infilled with plastered brick masonry were constructed. These frames had poor concrete quality. The frames did not have confinement of the stirrups at the HIcolumn and beam ends. The frames were tested under the reversed cyclic loading. One frame was used as a reference frame (tested with no strengthening) and the other frame's only infill walls were strengthened over the plaster. At the end of the tests, strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and story drift characteristics of the specimens were examined. Since this research is only a small part of a greater research, the results are used as a basis for the following researches.

Seismic vulnerability assessment using regional empirical data
Yakut, Ahmet; Yucemen, M. Semih (2006-08-01)
This article presents a procedure developed for the seismic performance assessment of low- to mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey. The past performance of reinforced concrete buildings during major earthquakes have been compiled and analysed comprehensively using statistical procedures in order to study the empirical correlation between the significant damage inducing parameters and the observed damage. A damage database of nearly 500 representative buildings experiencing the 1999 Kocaeli and D...
Seismic strengthening of masonry infilled r/c frames with steel fiber reinforcement
Sevil, Tuğçe; Canbay, Erdem; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Seismic resistance of many buildings in Turkey is insufficient. Strengthening using R/C infills requires huge construction work. Feasible, easy strengthening techniques are being studied in Structural Mechanics Laboratory of METU. In this project, it was aimed to develop an economical strengthening method. This method is based on addition of steel fibers and/or PP fibers in mortar and application of mortar on masonry wall. Project was sponsored by the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜB...
Assessment of tsunami resilience of Haydarpasa Port in the Sea of Marmara by high-resolution numerical modeling

Turkey is highly prone to earthquakes because of active fault zones in the region. The Marmara region located at the western extension of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) is one of the most tectonically active zones in Turkey. Numerous catastrophic events such as earthquakes or earthquake/landslide-induced tsunamis have occurred in the Marmara Sea basin. According to studies on the past tsunami records, the Marmara coasts have been hit by 35 different tsunami events in the last 2000 years. The recent o...
Seismic fragilities for non-ductile reinforced concrete frames - Role of aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties
Çelik, Ozan Cem (2010-01-01)
Seismic fragilities are essential to earthquake loss estimation and performance-based earthquake engineering in regions of high seismicity. Construction practices for frames in regions of moderate seismicity are quite different, and such frames have received less attention in the literature. Fragilities for performance levels identified in recent seismic regulations are developed herein for reinforced concrete frames designed for gravity load in low-seismic regions using probabilistic non-linear finite elem...
Seismic Fragility of Wide-Beam Infill-Joist Block Reinforced Concrete Frame Buildings
Karaaslan, Enes; Dönmez, Cemalettin; Erberik, Murat Altuğ (2017-01-13)
Wide-beam infill-joist block (WBIJB) reinforced concrete (RC) frame is a popular construction technique in Turkey and the Mediterranean basin. Even though there were previous observations and considerations about the problematic seismic behavior of the WBIJB frames, the behavior was concealed behind the general weaknesses of the RC frames. Currently WBIJB RC frames are not considered as a separate sub-class of RC frame systems during regional damage and loss estimation studies. However, the recent earthquak...
