Development of risk based soil quality standards for Turkey
İpek, Hatice Meltem; Ünlü, Kahraman; Department of Environmental Engineering (2011)
Soil quality standards (SQSs) are one of the most important elements of management system for contaminated sites. In order to manage risks associated with soil contamination, risk based SQSs are used worldwide. However, in Turkey, the Soil Pollution Control Regulation in force was focusing mainly on the use of stabilized sludge on soil and was including standards for a limited number of parameters, mainly metals and some organic chemicals. Thus, existing SQSs were far away from providing common criteria for...
Modeling of settlement in saturated and unsaturated municipal landfills
Durmusoglu, Ertan; Corapcioglu, M.Yavuz; Tuncay, Kağan (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2006-07-01)
Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are not only used to dispose the refuse in most economical way but also utilized as a viable land in today’s waste management strategy. Settlement prediction is an important issue in order to guarantee the integrity of any postclosure structure on landfills. In this study, landfill settlement in saturated and unsaturated landfills is investigated by developing a one-dimensional mathematical model and performing numerical experiments. Under the saturated conditions, the ...
Assessment of core-filter configuration performance of rock-fill dams under uncertainties
Çalamak, Melih; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2018-04-01)
Probabilistic analyses are conducted for seepage through a rock-fill dam having two different core-filter configurations: one sloping and the other a central symmetrical core-filter arrangement. Uncertainties in core and filter are considered, assuming their hydraulic conductivities as random variables. For this purpose, finite-element software used for groundwater flow and seepage analyses is coupled with a random-number-generation algorithm. Monte Carlo simulations are performed for probabilistic seepage ...
STATISTICAL PARAMETERS CHARACTERIZING THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF SELECTED SOIL HYDRAULIC-PROPERTIES
Ünlü, Kahraman; BIGGAR, JW; MORKOC, F (Wiley, 1990-11-01)
The knowledge of the statistical parameters of the variance, sigma-2, and the correlation scale, lambda, characterizing the spatial structures of the log of the saturated hydraulic conductivity, lnK(s), pore size distribution parameter alpha, and the specific water capacity, C, is required in stochastic modeling in order to understand the overall response of large-scale heterogenous unsaturated flow systems. These parameters are estimated assuming second-order stationarity and an exponential semivariogram ...
Designing heat-exchanger networks for energy savings in chemical plants
Özgen, Canan; Baç, Nurcan; Gürkan, Türker; Tosun, İsmail (Elsevier BV, 1989-12)
The pinch-design method is applied to the evaluation of heat-exchanger networks for an existing monomer plant. The problem resulting from partially condensed multicomponent vapor streams possessing variable CP () values is solved by applying a novel technique. The rigorous design obtained is further revised by the consideration of plant constraints.
