A macroscopic model for self-organized aggregation in swarm robotic systems
Soysal, Onur; Şahin, Erol (2006-10-01)
We study the self-organized aggregation of a swarm of robots in a closed arena. We assume that the perceptual range of the robots are smaller than the size of the arena and the robots do not have information on the size of the swarm or the arena. Using a probabilistic aggregation behavior model inspired from studies of social insects, we propose a macroscopic model for predicting the final distribution of aggregates in terms of the parameters of the aggregation behavior, the arena size and the sensing chara...
The concept of behavioural additionality of public support for private R&D and a methodological proposal for an evaluation framework in Turkey
Gök, Abdullah; Geray, Haluk; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2006)
The changes in the behaviour of the innovating firm that would not have been the case in the absence of the public support, behavioural additionality, is investigated in this thesis. The theoretical foundations of the concept along with the existing evaluation attempts worldwide are analysed. The need for evaluation in Turkey is established. The design of the TÜBİTAK-TEYDEB programme in question along with the related policy context is described to form a basis for the evaluation of the behavioural addition...
Theory of impurity induced lattice distortions in the normal phase of charge density wave systems
Turgut, Sadi (1994-05-01)
A phenomenological Ginzburg-Laundau theory is applied to the normal phase of one-dimensional charge-density-wave systems with a finite concentration of impurities. It is found that the interaction between the impurities and the highly polarizable electron gas leads to a strong and oscillatory impurityimpurity interaction, which in turn leads to ordered impurity arrangements and to sizeable periodic lattice distortions. The effect is very strongly dependent on the charge of the impurities, their concentratio...
Analysis of stochastic and non-stochastic volatility models.
Özkan, Pelin; Ayhan, Hüseyin Öztaş; Department of Statistics (2004)
Changing in variance or volatility with time can be modeled as deterministic by using autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (ARCH) type models, or as stochastic by using stochastic volatility (SV) models. This study compares these two kinds of models which are estimated on Turkish / USA exchange rate data. First, a GARCH(1,1) model is fitted to the data by using the package E-views and then a Bayesian estimation procedure is used for estimating an appropriate SV model with the help of Ox code. In order...
Modern mathematical methods in modeling and dynamics of regulatory systems of gene-environment networks
Defterli, Özlem; Kaya Merdan, Songül; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Department of Mathematics (2011)
Inferring and anticipation of genetic networks based on experimental data and environmental measurements is a challenging research problem of mathematical modeling. In this thesis, we discuss gene-environment network models whose dynamics are represented by a class of time-continuous systems of ordinary differential equations containing unknown parameters to be optimized. Accordingly, time-discrete version of that model class is studied and improved by using different numerical methods. In this aspect, 3rd-...
